Drug and Alcohol Policy
Use of alcohol and/or drugs may affect a person’s work performance or conduct. MitR representatives adversely affected by alcohol or other drug use may impede the overall performance of the MitR or put themselves and/or other people in the workplace at risk of harm. This is the case whether the alcohol or drugs are consumed or taken outside of work or in the workplace.
1. Scope
This policy applies to all current officers and employees, contractors, and volunteers, wherever work is being conducted including social gatherings associated with performances and events.
2. Policy
MitR representatives must not be adversely affected by either alcohol or drugs at any time while at work. This includes the intentional misuse of medicines prescribed by a doctor or available from a pharmacy.
Alcohol
It is acknowledged that at times alcohol may be available at MitR, or MitR related, functions and social events. MitR representatives should be mindful of their own alcohol tolerance and are expected to drink responsibly and not consume excessive amounts of alcohol at these events or prior to these events.
Water and/or other non-alcoholic drinks, and food, should be made available.
MitR representatives have a responsibility to take proactive steps to assist any colleague who they observe to be drinking alcohol to excess to stop doing so.
A MitR representative is not permitted to consume alcohol prior to driving a motor vehicle on MiTt business.
Illicit drugs
MiTR has a zero tolerance regarding illicit drugs in the workplace.
Licit drugs
If any MitR representative uses licit drugs for legitimate reasons, and if the use of these drugs may be expected to interfere with MiTR representative’s ability to perform their duties safely and professionally or negatively affect MiTR in any way, MiTR representative must notify MiTR. A letter from the prescribing doctor must be provided as part of the notification.
Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, is prohibited on all work premises of MiTR.
3. Breaches of this policy
Breaches of the Policy may be considered misconduct or potentially serious misconduct and therefore subject to management and/or disciplinary actions. In serious cases, or repeat cases, this may include termination of employment or engagement with MiTR or reporting to police.
